Open Source Technology

The CERN Node services are built on mature, openly developed software to handle the scale of the LHC. Every project below is open source and links to its upstream repository, so the technology behind the Node is fully transparent and reusable.

Rucio

Data Management

The scientific data management framework behind the Node's data services. Rucio organises, locates, and replicates large volumes of data across globally distributed storage, originally built to manage the exabytes produced by the LHC experiments.

REANA

Reproducible Workflows

The reproducible analysis platform that runs containerised pipelines on distributed compute clouds. REANA captures the full computational workflow (inputs, code, and environment) so results can be re-executed and verified by anyone.

SWAN

Interactive Analysis

The Jupyter-based interactive analysis service powering the CERN VRE. SWAN ships pre-configured scientific software stacks and connects notebooks directly to CERN storage and compute.

CVMFS

Software Distribution

The CernVM File System distributes scientific software stacks worldwide over HTTP. It lets analysis environments load the exact toolchains they need on demand, without local installation, underpinning reproducibility across the Node.

CERNBox

Sync & Share

CERNBox is the CERN Cloud Storage provided to the CERN community. It is powered by Reva, which implements open APIs to connect sync-and-share storage to applications and federated services across research infrastructures.

Open Cloud Mesh

Federation

Open Cloud Mesh (OCM) is a server-to-server protocol designed to enable sharing across independent administrative domains, thus federating storage and compute resources. While its primary use-case is Enterprise File Sync&Share systems, OCM is also being implemented for more general use-cases.

File Transfer Service

Data Transfer

The File Transfer Service (FTS) is responsible for reliably moving the bulk of LHC data between sites. FTS schedules, optimises, and monitors large-scale transfers across the World-wide Computing Grid.

Invenio

Digital Repositories

The open digital-library framework powering Zenodo, the CERN Open Data portal, INSPIRE-HEP, and HEPData. Invenio handles preservation, metadata, DOIs, and discovery for FAIR research outputs.

Indico

Event Management

The event-management platform used worldwide for conferences, meetings, and lectures. Indico is developed at CERN and released as open source for the wider research community.
